On this page we will go over how much wire to use, the kind of wire to use, and when to use which gauge of wire. If you have any further questions, call our customer service line and talk to one of our many accommodating customer service representatives.

How Much Wire Will You Need?

Before you buy more wire, check the contents of the product for how much wire is included in the pet fence package that you are purchasing. Many of the pet fences that we offer usually come with 500 feet of wire. Check the wire chart below for how much wire you will need. If you do not know how big the yard is, now is a good time to find out.

What Kind of Wire to Use?

When purchasing additional wire to use, ONLY use Burial Approved wires for use with pet fences. Since the wire is going to be outdoors and exposed to the elements, you want a wire that is going to be tough enough to withstand the abuse. Burial Approved wires have a long lasting waterproof Polyurethane coat and a solid copper core.

Use 20-Gauge if:

  • Yards with smooth, loose soil or clay.
  • If laying the wire along a fence.
  • If the yard has few trees and vegetation.

Use 18-Gauge if:

  • Rocky soil is present.
  • If installing the wire above ground.
  • If the yard has many trees and vegetation.
